Well Add-ons are small pieces of software which change or add to the appearance or functionality of Fire fox. There are three kinds of add-ons: extensions, themes, and plugins.

Extensions-This one adds functionality to the firefox browser. They can add anything from a toolbar button to a completely new feature. They allow the application to be customized to fit the personal needs of each user while minimizing the size and appearance of the application itself.

Themes-As the name suggests it is used for decoration of browser or in other words you can give a good look to the browser. A theme can simply change the appearance of toolbar buttons.

Plugins: Plugins help Firefox perform specific functions like viewing special graphic formats or playing multimedia files. Plugins are slightly different from extensions, which modify or add to existing functionality. A typical purpose of a plugin is to add multimedia capabilities, such as the ability to embed and play videos on a web page.

How to get addons

You can download and install many add-ons from Firefox Add-ons. Internet searches will find many other add-ons as well.

In the Add-ons window, to the left of Extensions and Themes, you can click on the Get Add-ons panel to search Firefox Add-ons

When you click on a link to install an add-on, Firefox displays a dialog asking you for permission to install the add-on. You can choose to allow the installation or to cancel the process.

How to use and update add ons

You can open addons by clicking it from tools menu.

Firefox always check for next update of any plugins ,so whenever any new update will be available it will show you or ask for updates on the next start of firefox. You can change this behavior in the Update tab of the Advanced panel of OptionsPreferences window. You can check for updates manually by selecting the Extensions or Themes panel and clicking the Find Updates button. If updates are available, the Add-ons window displays an Updates panel, where you can choose the updates you want to install. Click the Install Updates button to update those add-ons. You need to restart Firefox for changes to take effect.
